The Victor: Barack Obama; first African-American man to be elected to the United States presidency

The Vanquished: Chelsea 1 Roma 3

Aah what an interesting week it's been.

And of course the topic on everyone's lips is Barack Obama, the first black man to break the shackles of racism to climb to the very pinnacle of succes: The US Presidency. After what has been the costliest and perhaps most gruelling campaign ever in US history, Obama claimed a landslide victory over Republican rival John McCain to take his place in the White House next year come January. Obama was already the hot favourite before the actual election on Nov 4, and the non-emergence of a pundit-confounding gut-busting miraculous fightback from the Republican camp sealed the win for Obama. After winning swing state Pennsylvania, Obama knew he had won and McCain surrendered graciously by giving him a congratulatory phone call.

The win is extremely momentious and symbolic, as it shows how far America has come from those days of black slavery and extreme racial abuse. A 100 years ago, Mr. Obama could have been a slave and everyone around the world would have laughed derisively at the notion that a black man would ever take office in the White House.

But it has happened. Obama has done it, and made history.

And he looks forward to making more history with the US.

"The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America - I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you - we as a people will get there.

There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who wont agree with every decision or policy I make as President, and we know that government cant solve every problem. But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree. And above all, I will ask you join in the work of remaking this nation the only way its been done in America for two-hundred and twenty-one years - block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand." -excerpted from Obama's victory speech

Of course, he was probably helped by the fact that the Americans were sick to death of the Bush and Republican adminstration and the collapse of Wall Street only sent Republican ratings further down the drain. Obama had, after all, always painted McCain as a Bush clone, so maybe therein lay his downfall.

But nevertheless, Obama has won and we in Asia will certainly hope for better diplomatic ties and less meddling in our affairs from the US when he is at the helm.

Is the dawn of a new era? Will there really be hope and change as promised?

America has spoken and decided. But the future is yet to be seen.

Damn Totti and gang. Damn them. Spoiling our chances of qualifying. I mean we still can obviously but we should have sealed it at the Stadium Olimpico. But credit to Roma, we played horribly and need to step it up 3 gears at least if we want to make it to the knockout stages.

Rovers, be prepared for a backlash this weekend.
