And It's Over!

And so the Beijing Olympics 2008 drew to a conclusion at about 10.00 pm just now. The closing ceremony performances included guest appearances by Jackie Chan, Jacky Cheung, Leona Lewis (the sound system was pretty bad so I couldn't really hear her), David Beckham, Rain and Wang Lee Hom. As before, the performances included thousands of performers dressed in lavish costumes and brilliant fireworks lit up the sky for a good ten minutes at the finale making the Bird's Nest look like a vast, never-ending spectrum of glowing colours. Let's hope they weren't pre-recorded this time!

After 12 barren years, a silver medal has come home. Although our divers, archers, badminton players and cyclists could have done a lot better, we're all still proud that at least we have something to show for this time around.

Here's to looking forward to the 2012 London Olympics!

Sunderland won 2-1 thanks to a late Djibril Cisse header, while Stoke beat Aston Villa 3-2 at the Brittania. The Gunners lost 1-0 at Craven Cottage while Hull continued to defy the critics by earning a 1-1 draw at Blackburn.

Unfortunately, I just read that although we won 1-0 thanks to a Deco free-kick at Wigan 20 minutes ago, Chelsea failed to impress after that stunning demolition of Portsmouth.

Uh-oh, doesn't look good. Post-match reports don't look good either. Oh dear, maybe Chelsea got a little too overconfident after last week. Luis Felipe Scolari, please take this as a wake up call to not rest on your laurels just yet, it's only August.

Tomorrow night: Man Utd vs Pompey

Prediction: A (quite) toothless Man Utd to possibly scrape a draw against a miserable Pompey side low on confidence. Or on the other extreme, a rejuvenated Pompey to fire a few past the Cristiano Ronaldo-less Red Devils. Either way, looks like it's going to be a tough evening for Sir Alex Ferguson.
